Study Days

Crisis is the new normal, whether we are speaking of the economy, the environment, or contemporary subjectivity. Lacan regarded Aristotle’s Rhetoric as the philosopher’s most significant work for psychoanalysts.  It is in that work that the etymological underpinnings of ‘crisis’ can be found in Aristotle’s krinein, referring to a decision, and one encapsulated by discourse. In 2016, the Lacan Circle of Melbourne will dedicate its study days to examining crisis in both its contemporary and classical senses, with papers on the themes raised by Lacan’s Seminar X, on anxiety. Those wishing to contribute papers or suggest discussions are welcome to contact <david.ferraro@thepsychologyclinic.com.au>.

This year, the Lacan Circle will precede each study day with a brief introductory seminar to elementary concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The seminars are intended to provide beginners and the tentative with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with some of the psychoanalytic lexicon, in a convivial and conversational atmosphere.

Seminar on Fundamental Texts in Lacanian Psychoanalysis

In 2016, LCM will also resume its seminar on fundamental texts, and will study this year Lacan’s Seminar IX on identification (1961-62). Situated towards the end of the so-called ‘early Lacan’ period, this text offers some interesting and useful insights into the trajectory of Lacan’s theoretical development during this phase, through consolidation of various formulations in his earlier seminars in the 1950s. The study of the text will also complement the focus of this year’s LCM Study Days on Seminar X on anxiety, which follows directly the current text.

The seminar typically follows the text chapter by chapter, though occasional guest presentations and discussion on specific topics relevant to the text may be held during the year. This seminar welcomes participants with a diverse range of background, experience and familiarity with Lacanian and other psychoanalytic texts, and an English translation of the text is available for free through the following link.
